About Surgery

Several options exist in Bariatric Surgery. We've chosen the Roux-en-Y procedure because of what we feel it offers to our patients. This operation diminishes the stomach volume to the size of an egg, and reroutes the small intestines in a way that decreases absorption of the food you do eat. There are two ways to do the procedure. One is an "open" procedure where an incision is made in the upper abdomen. If you've had previous abdominal surgery, several children, or have other conditions that may complicate your surgery, this may be your best option.

The other is a "laparoscopic" procedure that uses several smaller incisions in different locations over your abdomen, and a camera to let us see what is going on inside. We do the surgery with special instruments that go through the small incisions we make. We will decide whether your surgery should be open or laparoscopic together.

Read a comparison of the open and laparoscopic procedures.
